Skype is Saying Goodbye in 2025 – What Comes Next?

One of the most well-known communication platforms is reaching its end. Skype will officially be discontinued in May 2025, forcing millions of users to find an alternative. If you use Skype for calls, chats, or business, this might seem like a big change—but there’s no need to worry. Microsoft is making sure users have an easy way to switch.

The company is transitioning users to Microsoft Teams Free, a modern communication platform with added features. If you’re already using Skype, there’s no need to create a new account. Simply log into Teams Free with your existing Skype credentials, and your contacts and chat history will move with you. The transition is being rolled out gradually, starting with users in the Skype and Teams Insider programs.

What Should You Do Now?

If you’re wondering how to prepare for Skype’s shutdown, here’s what you can do:

  • Switch to Microsoft Teams Free – Microsoft recommends this as the best alternative. Sign in with your Skype details, and your contacts and chats will be available.
  • Export Your Skype Data – If you don’t want to move to Teams Free, you can download your chat history and contacts before Skype shuts down.
  • Keep Using Skype for Now – You don’t need to rush. Skype will remain active until May 5, 2025, giving you plenty of time to decide.

For paid Skype users, existing calling plans and Skype Number subscriptions will continue to renew until April 3, 2025. After the shutdown, Skype’s Dial Pad will still be available via the web and inside Teams Free for users with an active balance. If you plan to transfer your Skype Number to another provider, you should contact your new carrier for assistance.

What Won’t Be Transferred?

Most of your chats and contacts will move to Teams Free, but some data won’t be included in the transition, such as:

  • Chats between Skype users and Teams work/school accounts
  • Skype to Skype for Business chat history
  • Private conversations and self-chat history
  • Any messages involving bots or Copilot

If you need any of this information, it’s best to export your data before May 2025.

Can You Use Skype and Teams Free Together?

Yes! Until May 5, 2025, you can continue using both Skype and Teams Free without losing access to either. Additionally, you’ll still be able to chat and call Skype users from Teams Free during this transition period.

When Will Skype Data Be Deleted?

If you take no action, your Skype data will be available until January 2026. After that, Microsoft will permanently delete all stored data. If you log into Teams Free before then, your chat and call history will still be accessible.

Do I need a new account for Teams Free?

No, you can log into Teams Free using your existing Skype account. Your contacts and chat history will appear automatically.

Can I still use Skype after logging into Teams Free?

Will my paid Skype subscription continue?

Can I still message or call Skype users from Teams Free?
